Morgantown is a city in Monongalia County, West Virginia, United States, and its county seat. It is situated along the Monongahela River near the state border with Pennsylvania. With a population of 30,347 at the 2020 census, Morgantown is the third-most populous city in West Virginia. The city serves as one of the principal cities in north-central West Virginia and anchors the broader Morgantown metropolitan area, which has an estimated 140,000 residents. Morgantown is best known as the home of West Virginia University, the state's flagship public research university.
